  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
Simple Chocolate Frosting (Optional but Recommended)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and prepare two greased 9-inch cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
  4. Slowly stir in hot coffee until the batter becomes thin and fully combined.
  5. Divide batter into pans and bake 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool cakes completely, then frost and assemble.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs and milk for smoother batter.
  • Coffee enhances chocolate flavor without tasting like coffee.
  • Chill cake layers before frosting for cleaner edges.
  • Rotate pans halfway through baking for even cooking.
  • Dust pans with cocoa powder instead of flour.
