- Caramelize onions 18–20 minutes.

Notes
- Take your time caramelizing the onions. Deep golden color equals deeper flavor.
- If the mixture looks too thick before baking, add 2–3 tablespoons of warm chicken broth to loosen it slightly.
- For extra flavor, add ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard to the sauce.
- Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after baking so the sauce thickens properly.
