Ingredients

For the Beef Filling
  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
For the Sauce
  • 1 can (300g) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Topping
  • 3 cups frozen tater tots
  • cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup mozzarella cheese (optional for extra melt)

Method

  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, then add onion and garlic and cook until softened. This builds the base flavor of the casserole and ensures the meat is fully cooked.
  2. Stir in vegetables and seasonings, cooking briefly to combine flavors while keeping vegetables slightly firm for better texture after baking.
  3. Mix the sauce ingredients separately, then combine with the beef mixture to create a creamy, cohesive filling.
  4. Transfer the mixture into a baking dish and spread evenly, then add a layer of cheese to enhance richness throughout.
  5. Arrange tater tots in a single layer on top and bake until crispy and golden for the perfect texture contrast.
  6. Add remaining cheese and bake briefly until melted and bubbly for a finished, comforting dish.

Notes

  • Allow the beef to brown properly before stirring so it develops deeper flavor and avoids excess moisture in the pan.
  • Keep the vegetable cooking time short so they retain texture and don’t become overly soft after baking.
  • Always layer cheese inside and on top to create a balanced cheesy texture instead of just a surface topping.
  • Bake uncovered to ensure the tater tots crisp up properly rather than steaming under trapped moisture.
