Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 ¾ Cups All-purpose flour
  • ½ Cup Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • ½ tsp Salt
Wet Ingredients
  • ½ Cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ Cup Brown sugar
  • ¼ Cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
Flavor and Texture Add-ins
  • ¾ Cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ Cup Dried cherries, roughly chopped
  • ½ Cup Dark chocolate chunks
Optional Garnish
  • 2 tbsp Powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp Melted dark chocolate for drizzle

Method

  1. Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl until evenly combined and free of lumps so the dry ingredients distribute evenly throughout the dough.
  2. Beat softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until the mixture becomes light and fluffy, which helps create cookies with a soft and tender texture.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated so the dough becomes smooth and evenly flavored.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a thick chocolate cookie dough forms without overmixing.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips, dark chocolate chunks, and chopped dried cherries gently so they spread evenly throughout the dough.
  6. Scoop portions of dough onto a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven until the edges are set and the centers remain slightly soft.
  7. Cool the cookies before drizzling melted chocolate and dusting powdered sugar for a classic Black Forest dessert look.

Notes

  • Sifting cocoa powder before mixing prevents lumps and creates a smoother cookie dough texture.
  • Properly softened butter blends better with sugar and improves the cookie structure.
  • Lightly flouring dried cherries helps distribute them evenly throughout the cookie dough.
  • Removing cookies while the centers are still soft ensures a chewy texture after cooling.
